School-Based Mental Health Grant Tools & Resources
School-Based Mental Health (SBMH) Department of Education Grant is focused on supporting the provision of timely and necessary mental health supports to children and youth by 1) increasing the number of credentialed school-based mental health services providers in LEAs with demonstrated need through recruitment and retention-related incentives for school-based mental health services providers, 2) promoting the re-specialization and certification of existing mental health services providers to qualify them for work in LEAs with demonstrated need and 3) increasing the diversity and cultural and linguistic competency of school-based mental health services providers, including competency in providing identity-safe services.

Through insights gathered from school social workers, psychologists, and guidance counselors who participated in the 2024 Needs Assessment Survey funded through this grant, we heard that most participants felt the professional development and training topics offered did not fully address the knowledge and skills needed for their role. They indicated that they would benefit from more training in 1) Supporting Specific Student Populations, 2) Strategies to Address Cultural/Language Barriers, 3) Trauma-Informed and Evidence-Based Practices, and 4) Ethics. Links to resources in these focus areas have been included below, in addition to Other Helpful Resources.
Other Helpful Resources
-
Safe2Help Illinois is a 24/7 program where students can use a free app, text/phone, website, and other social media platforms to report school safety issues in a confidential environment. Once vetted, the tips will immediately be shared with local school officials, mental health professionals, and/or local law enforcement, depending on the nature of the tip. The program will also help local officials by connecting them with mental health resources or other appropriate resources to intervene and help students before they harm themselves or others.
